Read through the other conditions covered on this blog and you may notice something. Stress shows up in nearly every single one of them. It raises blood pressure. It disrupts blood sugar. It worsens cholesterol patterns. It fuels anxiety and depression. It wrecks sleep. It flares digestive issues, chronic pain, arthritis, and skin conditions. It suppresses testosterone and disrupts thyroid function. That’s not a coincidence, and it’s not me reaching for the same explanation over and over because it’s convenient. Chronic stress is genuinely one of the most far-reaching health factors that exists, and it deserves its own post, going deeper into the mechanism itself rather than just referencing it in passing.

What Stress Is

Stress, at its core, is your body’s response to a perceived demand or threat, and it’s not inherently bad. Acute stress, the short-term kind, is one of the most useful systems your body has. It’s what lets you react instantly to a genuine emergency, perform under pressure during a big presentation, or push through the final mile of a hard workout. This response is often called fight-or-flight, and it runs through what’s called the HPA axis, short for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, a communication chain between your brain and your adrenal glands.

Here’s roughly how it works. Your brain perceives a threat, real or psychological, and signals your adrenal glands to release stress hormones, primarily adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline produces the immediate physical response, faster heart rate, heightened alertness, energy mobilized to your muscles. Cortisol follows more slowly and sustains that heightened state, affecting blood sugar, immune function, and metabolism to keep your body ready for sustained effort if needed. Once the perceived threat passes, a healthy stress response includes a return to baseline, your parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes called rest-and-digest, taking back over, and your body recovering.

Chronic stress is what happens when that system doesn’t get the chance to return to baseline, either because the stressor itself doesn’t resolve, financial pressure, a difficult relationship, an unrelenting work situation, or because your nervous system has become sensitized enough that it stays activated even without a clear, ongoing trigger. This is fundamentally different from a single stressful event. It’s a sustained state, and your body wasn’t designed to run in that state indefinitely.

Researcher Hans Selye, who did some of the foundational work on stress physiology decades ago, described this as a three-stage process, sometimes called General Adaptation Syndrome. First, an alarm stage, the immediate fight-or-flight activation. Second, a resistance stage, where the body adapts and tries to maintain function despite the ongoing demand, often at a real physiological cost. And third, if the stress never resolves, an exhaustion stage, where the systems involved in the stress response start to break down under the sustained load. A lot of what gets called burnout maps closely onto this exhaustion stage, not simply feeling tired, but a genuine depletion of the physiological systems that were never meant to run at full activation for months or years at a time.

Not All Stress Is the Enemy

Before going further, I want to draw out a distinction that gets lost in most stress conversations. Not all stress is harmful, and treating stress itself as the villain misses something important. Researchers distinguish between eustress, positive, motivating stress that comes with a challenge you feel capable of meeting, a workout, a deadline you’re excited about, a first date, and distress, the negative kind associated with feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope with what’s being demanded of you.

Physiologically, the initial response to both looks similar, the same stress hormones, the same heightened alertness. What differs is the psychological framing and, critically, whether the activation resolves afterward. A hard workout is genuine physical stress, and it’s also one of the healthiest things you can do, precisely because your body recovers fully afterward and comes back stronger for having handled it. The goal was never to eliminate stress from your life entirely, which isn’t realistic or even desirable. The goal is having a nervous system capable of mobilizing when a real demand shows up, and then genuinely returning to baseline once it’s passed, rather than staying activated long after the actual demand has ended.

The Concept of Allostatic Load

I want to introduce a term that doesn’t get used much outside of research but explains a lot about why chronic stress does so much damage, allostatic load. Allostasis refers to your body’s process of maintaining stability through change, adapting to demands as they arise. Allostatic load refers to the cumulative wear and tear on your body from repeatedly having to make those adaptations, especially when the demands are frequent, prolonged, or come without adequate recovery in between.

Think of it like a bridge designed to flex under normal traffic loads. Occasional heavy loads are fine, the structure is built to handle them and return to its resting state afterward. But constant heavy loads, without enough time to fully recover between them, gradually wear down the structure in ways that eventually show up as real, measurable damage. Your body works similarly. A single, resolved stressful event has a cost, but your body recovers. Repeated, unresolved stress, month after month, accumulates a physiological cost that eventually shows up as exactly the kinds of conditions stress research consistently points to, elevated blood pressure, disrupted blood sugar, suppressed immune function, hormonal disruption, and more.

This is a genuinely useful way to think about chronic stress, not as one problem in one place, but as accumulated debt across multiple body systems, which is exactly why addressing it tends to improve so many seemingly unrelated symptoms at once when it’s genuinely resolved.

Why Some People Get Stuck in Chronic Stress More Than Others

The nature of the stressor itself matters enormously. Stress that’s unpredictable, uncontrollable, or feels like it has no clear endpoint tends to produce a more sustained activation than stress that’s predictable or within your control, even when the objective severity is similar. This is well-documented in research going back decades. A demanding but predictable job produces a different physiological load than a chaotic, unpredictable one, even at comparable difficulty levels, because uncertainty itself is a significant driver of sustained stress activation.

Early life experiences shape how reactive your stress system is for the rest of your life. Adverse childhood experiences, including abuse, neglect, and chronic instability, are associated with a stress response system that’s more easily triggered and slower to return to baseline in adulthood. This isn’t a life sentence, the nervous system remains genuinely capable of change throughout life, but it does mean some people are working with a system that was calibrated toward heightened reactivity from a young age, through no fault of their own, and that deserves real compassion rather than judgment.

Genetics influence baseline stress reactivity too. Some people’s HPA axis runs more reactive than others from birth, independent of life experience, part of why two people facing the exact same stressor can have genuinely different physiological responses to it.

A lack of recovery time between stressors is one of the more overlooked factors. Modern life, particularly with constant digital connectivity, often doesn’t provide the clear boundaries between stress and recovery that earlier ways of living did. Work stress bleeds into evening hours through email and notifications. News and social media provide a steady stream of low-grade stress input throughout the day. The nervous system needs genuine downtime to return to baseline, and a lot of modern life structurally doesn’t provide much of it.

Social isolation removes one of the most powerful natural buffers against stress. Social connection has a well-documented, measurable effect on stress physiology, sometimes described as co-regulation, where the presence of safe, supportive people genuinely calms your nervous system in real time. People with strong social support show measurably different stress hormone responses to the same stressors than people facing them alone.

Poor sleep and chronic stress feed each other directly. Sleep is when a lot of stress hormone regulation resets, and chronically poor sleep leaves that reset process incomplete, compounding the accumulated load rather than clearing it.

Certain personality patterns and coping styles influence how stress gets processed. Perfectionism, difficulty setting boundaries, and a tendency to suppress or avoid difficult emotions rather than process them are all associated with higher chronic stress burden, not because these traits are moral failings, but because they tend to keep the nervous system engaged with stressors longer than a different coping style might.

Financial stress deserves specific mention, since research consistently identifies it as one of the more corrosive, sustained stressors people face. It tends to be chronic rather than acute, often feels genuinely uncontrollable, and touches nearly every other area of life at once, which lines up closely with the exact combination of factors, unpredictability, lack of control, and lack of resolution, that research shows drives the most sustained stress activation.

How Chronic Stress Connects to the Rest of the Body

This connection is worth drawing out explicitly, because it may be the most important point in this entire post. Elevated cortisol raises blood pressure directly. It disrupts insulin sensitivity, connecting straight to blood sugar regulation. It affects lipid metabolism, connecting to cholesterol patterns. It suppresses the immune system’s regulatory function, which plays a role in inflammatory conditions like arthritis and certain skin conditions. It disrupts the gut-brain axis, connecting to digestive issues. It fragments sleep. It competes directly with testosterone production and disrupts thyroid function. And it’s a core driver of anxiety and a significant contributor to depression.

This is exactly why I don’t think of stress management as one wellness practice among many. It functions as foundational infrastructure that every other system in the body depends on functioning well. You can optimize diet, movement, and sleep individually, and still see limited results if a nervous system stuck in chronic activation is working against all of it at the same time.

Natural Approaches That Support Nervous System Regulation

Breathwork is the fastest, most direct tool available, because breath is one of the only parts of the stress response you can consciously influence. Slow, extended exhales activate your parasympathetic nervous system directly, shifting your body out of sympathetic activation in real time, not eventually. Meditation trains the capacity to notice a stress response without immediately being swept up in it. Vipassana meditation is a well-documented example of this kind of training, and it taught me directly about the gap between a sensation and my reaction to it. That skill, built through consistent practice, changes how much time your nervous system spends in an activated state across an ordinary day.

Protecting genuine recovery time matters as much as managing the stressors themselves. This means real boundaries around work hours, deliberate breaks from constant digital input, and treating downtime as a legitimate physiological need rather than something to feel guilty about or constantly interrupt.

Sleep is both a consequence of chronic stress and one of the more powerful tools for reducing it. Protecting consistent, quality sleep gives your stress hormone system the nightly reset it needs, addressing the accumulation directly rather than just managing symptoms during the day.

Whole food nutrition supports the physical systems stress depletes. Chronic stress increases the body’s demand for certain nutrients, including B vitamins and magnesium, and a diet consistently low in whole foods leaves fewer resources available to support recovery from that ongoing demand.

Play, humor, and genuine leisure aren’t indulgences, they’re a real counterbalance to sustained stress activation. Activities engaged in purely for enjoyment, without a productivity goal attached, activate different physiological and psychological states than the achievement-oriented mode most adults spend the bulk of their time in, and that shift matters more than it gets credit for.

Naming and addressing chronically unresolved stressors directly, rather than only managing your response to them, matters too. All the breathwork in the world helps less if the underlying stressor, a toxic work situation, an unsustainable financial pattern, a relationship that consistently drains you, never gets addressed at all. Sometimes the most important stress management tool is the harder conversation or decision you’ve been avoiding, not another relaxation technique layered on top of an unchanged situation.
